6 REASONS THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES’ SO CALLED “WILDLIFE” ORDINANCE IS BAD FOR LOS ANGELES
1. The “Wildlife” Ordinance will significantly reduce the ability to build new additions or replace aging housing throughout the hills, and negatively affects small and medium-sized properties far more than large estates. Billions of dollars in home values will be lost. (Link to housing report)
2. This ordinance is simply a collection of extreme NIMBY anti-development regulations using “wildlife protection” as a cover.
3. The Ordinance will require discretionary entitlements called “Site Plan Review” for thousands of properties in the affected area. This process takes over a year to complete, costs tens of thousands of dollars in the city and consultant fees, and has no guarantee of approval.
4. This Ordinance is a direct violation of the Housing Crisis Act, which states that floor area allowances cannot be reduced without concurrent up-zoning of another neighborhood, which will create higher density and more inequitable housing throughout the rest of the city.
5. Environmental experts have concluded that it will “not achieve the desired goals and will more than likely put wildlife, humans, domestic pets, and children at risk”.
6. Although the Ordinance will already affect almost 10% of the City, the City is already planning an expansion of the “Wildlife” Ordinance to hillside areas throughout the entire city, which will affect approximately 132,000 properties!
WHAT’S HAPPENING NEXT?
It is unknown when this Ordinance will appear again before the City Council. It could be a matter of weeks or months.
